On January 3rd at noon at Washington, D.C., the sworn in 116th Congress has officially convened. This historical congress has a Democratic majority, the first time in eight years, and comprises a record number of women and minorities. Nancy Pelosi, who was re-elected as House Speaker and remains the first woman to serve in the position, remarked that this Congress “will be transparent, bipartisan and unifying.”
Facebook has recently invested $1 million in CodePath.org, an organization that teaches computer science to women and minorities in universities across the nation. This investment is projected to help the organization quadruple the number of students accepted each semester in the program. Facebook hopes that this will help the underrepresentation of minority groups in computer science by giving minorities a chance to be more competitive candidates in the industry.
The National Women’s Business Council (NWBC) has released a new report profiling millennial women entrepreneurs, and the opportunities and challenges they face. The profile includes informative qualitative and quantitative data and research focus groups for a comprehensive look at how the millennial generation, those born between 1982 and 2000, view entrepreneurship and how obstacles such as student debt inhibit millennial women from pursuing running their own businesses.
Yesterday, Tuesday, Nov. 6th, Americans took to the polls to cast their votes in the 2018 Midterm Elections to elect candidates for Senate, the House of Representatives, State Governors and other local appointments and propositions. Not only did we see a surge of women and minority voters this year, but over 100 women were elected into Congress—at least 98 women in the House and 13 in the Senate—the highest representation of women in U.S. history.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign dedicated to increasing awareness of the disease, helping those affected through early detection, education and support, and fundraising for breast cancer research. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in 1985 by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries in an effort to advocate mammography as the most effective course of action when fighting breast cancer. McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.Org have recently released their Women in the Workplace 2018 report, one of the “largest comprehensive study of women in corporate America” since 2015, according to its website. The report showcases insights from data shared by 279 companies employing more than 13 million people and survey results from over 64,000 employees. While companies claim their commitment to improving gender diversity, progress in making it a reality has been wanting in the last four years.
