WHER Chat: California is Home to Top Cities for Minority-Owned Startups

Ecommerce software platform Volusion released a report on the top places in the United States with the greatest share of minority-owned startups. Their findings show that five out of the top 15 metropolitan areas with the highest share of minority-owned startups are in California, and only the top nine areas have more than 40 percent minority-owned startups.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign dedicated to increasing awareness of the disease, helping those affected through early detection, education and support, and fundraising for breast cancer research. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in 1985 by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries in an effort to advocate mammography as the most effective course of action when fighting breast cancer.

National Women’s Health & Fitness Day

Today marks National Women’s Health & Fitness Day, the largest event in the United States promoting women’s health awareness and physical activity that occurs on every last Wednesday of September. Over 500 groups across the country will join forces to inspire women of all ages to be healthy and active through events at senior centers, hospitals, health centers, parks, schools, and other community locations. An estimated 50,000 to 75,000 women are expected to participate this year.

WHER Chat: The State of Women and Girls in STEM

The National Girls Collaborative Project presents statistics on their website on the state of girls’ involvement in STEM through primary education – from kindergarten through high school, from an analysis of data from 2016 National Science Foundation reports. Here are some of their main findings regarding differences in STEM involvement for female students compared to their male counterparts. Students regardless of sex, race or ethnicity, enrolled in lower level science courses in 2012 at similar rates. However, students with less-educated parents or with lower socioeconomic status were less likely to take these courses.

WHER Chat: Supporting Girls’ Interests in STEM with a Growth Mindset

One well-supported reason for why there is a lower representation of women in the AI sector is that not many girls are encouraged to pursue STEM. Therefore, their interest in science and technology fields will quickly fade if that passion is not nourished with opportunity. According to a Microsoft survey, young women in Europe report that their interest in STEM began around age 11 or 12, but faltered when they reached the ages of 15 and 16.
