Representative Gregory W. Meeks (D-N.Y.) has recently introduced the Improving Corporate Governance Through Diversity Act of 2019, which will require public companies to disclose the gender, race, ethnicity and veteran status of their board directors, nominees and senior executive officers, as a way to track the progress of diverse representation in the corporate sphere.
A recent study by the Harvard Business School and Bella Research Group analyzing diversity within ownership of U.S. asset management shows that women and minorities have been significantly underrepresented in mutual funds, hedge funds, private equity and real estate between the years 2011 and 2017. However, the report also notes that diversity does not have a noticeable effect on performance.
On January 3rd at noon at Washington, D.C., the sworn in 116th Congress has officially convened. This historical congress has a Democratic majority, the first time in eight years, and comprises a record number of women and minorities. Nancy Pelosi, who was re-elected as House Speaker and remains the first woman to serve in the position, remarked that this Congress “will be transparent, bipartisan and unifying.”
A recent study by the Pew Research Center reveals that some believe women in top executive business positions are better than men at creating safe, respectful workplaces, which are important for facilitating a diverse corporate culture. The report reveals that 89 percent of adults state it’s “essential for today’s business leaders to create a safe and respectful workplace, and a greater share believe that women leaders are better equipped to achieve this.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released a statement announcing that it intends to “streamline” the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) Rule by changing the regulatory requirements it believes are inhibiting states and local communities from increasing affordable housing. HUD is accepting public comments on its proposed amendments for the next two months.
One has only to look at the AREAA (Asian Real Estate Association of America) 2017-18 report, State of Asia America, to see evidence of the strong diversity within the Asian American community. According to the report, the Asian American and Pacific Islander community is the fastest growing demographic in the United States, both in terms of natural born citizens and immigrants. Six ethnic groups within the Asian community number over one million each and over eight million people in the US speak either Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Korean or Hindi. These numbers are perhaps one reason the film Crazy Rich Asians coming to theaters this coming Wednesday, August 15th is generating tons of breathless excitement.

Walker, and Teresa Palacios Smith.
The penultimate panel of the 2018 NAWRB Conference was our Women’s Homeownership Panel focused on women buyers and how best to serve them. The panel featured a diverse speaker list of experienced real estate professionals, including Moderator Lenny McNeill, SVP, Managing Director of National Strategic Markets and Specialized Sales, U.S. Bank Home Mortgage; Adenike “Nike” Fasanya, Osilaja Owner, Marvel Ventures Mortgage, Inc.; Carmen Chong, CC Legacy Financial Corp. President, Broker and Life Insurance Agent; and Nelly DeLourdes Mitford, MP Global Real Estate Group, Commercial, International Investment and Residential Real Estate Services.

History was made when this year’s 70th Annual Primetime Emmy nominations were announced on July 12th and Sandra Oh took a Lead Actress nod for her portrayal of Eve Polastri on the BBC series ‘Killing Eve.’ With her nomination, Oh became the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for a Lead Actress role. Oh first came to widespread attention as an actress with the 2004 independent movie Sideways, but like most successful actors and actresses, Oh had been building a career both on the stage and screen long before.
