Influential Women in History

March is Women History Month and it is a great time to recognize the women who have made lasting impacts, as well as appreciate the women who continue to influence our lives.

Womens History Month is a time to recognize the many influential women of history who have helped shaped the view of women today. Without the contributions of these historical women, the opportunities accessible to women today would be much different.

The successes women currently experience are the direct results of the attitudes and perseverance of women like Coco Chanel, who had a vision to change the perception of women in society. Chanel believed women should be able to free themselves from the constraints of the tight corseted clothes of the era and be comfortable. Her radical idea revolutionized the fashion of women from the early 1900s into today. Her simplistic and comfortable design for a feminine blazer is still worn by professional women. Este Lauder is another example of an enterprising woman of history. She started her career by working with her uncle mixing creams and fragrances for his skincare business. Her passion for womens skincare grew into what is now the Este Lauder Co. Lauder took her vision of a womens skincare line, marketed persistently, and created a beauty empire that continues to dominate. Sandra Day OConnor was the first woman to hold a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. OConnor served on the Court for 24 years and helped make decisions on some of the most controversial cases. She changed the way women were viewed, by eliminating gender lines and deciding cases based on her education and professionalism. These three women are only a fraction of women who have influenced the views of women.

The present-day counterparts to these influential women are seen in Condoleezza Rice, Hilary Clinton, and Oprah Winfrey. These women continue to build upon the contributions of the many influential women of history, and create more opportunities for women today. Rices political career, advisor to two presidents and the first female African-American Secretary of State, is a testament to the progress women have made and continue to make. Hilary Clinton is an example of an influential woman who has been both impacted by other women in history, but is also paving the way for women today. She has had a successful career in the political arena, and actively advocates for women in developing nations. She has not let any obstacle deter her from her goals and continues to reach new heights. Oprah Winfrey, business woman, host, and philanthropist, represents the modern age woman. From humble beginnings to a media powerhouse, Oprah has opened up many doors for women everywhere. She has built herself a lasting empire and created opportunities for many women to do the same.

As we near the end of March it is important we look back at history and recognize the women who have made lasting impacts, as well as appreciate the women who continue to influence our lives.
