WHER Chat: Trump Administration Passes Building Blocks of STEM Act

On December 24, 2019, S. 737, the Building Blocks of STEM Act, was signed into law by the Trump Administration. The bill instructs  the National Science Foundation (NSF) “to more equitably allocate funding for research with a focus on early childhood education.” It also requires NSF to support research on potential factors that discourage or encourage girls to engage in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities and education.

California Wildfires: Eligibility for SBA Disaster Loans and Disaster Recovery Centers

While we still await updates, these California fires are being named the deadliest in the state’s history. At time of writing, the number of deaths from the Camp Fire in Northern California has risen to 77 while over 900 people remain missing. According to recent updates by Cal Fire, the Camp Fire has burned approximately 151,000 acres, causing over 40,000 residents to abandon their homes and find safety.

The Woosley Fire has burned more than 96,000 acres and numerous homes, and the Hill Fire in Ventura County has burned over 4,000 acres, including RVs and outbuildings. While the Hill Fire is fully contained, the Camp Fire is 66 percent contained and the Woolsey Fire is 94 percent contained. No matter how close your home or business is to wildland areas, it’s always best to be prepared in case of emergency evacuation, prepare your home to mitigate potential for damage, and have knowledge of your local and national recovery resources.

Women Make History in the 2018 Midterm Elections

Yesterday, Tuesday, Nov. 6th, Americans took to the polls to cast their votes in the 2018 Midterm Elections to elect candidates for Senate, the House of Representatives, State Governors and other local appointments and propositions. Not only did we see a surge of women and minority voters this year, but over 100 women were elected into Congress—at least 98 women in the House and 13 in the Senate—the highest representation of women in U.S. history.

I’m Cheryl Travis-Johnson, and I’m the Chief Operating Officer for VRM Mortgage Services. I’m also a part of the Council for Inclusion in Financial Services. At my first job as a COO of VRM, I handle end-to-end servicing solutions for clients from originations all the way through REO sales. For the Council for Inclusion in Financial Services, it’s kind of two-fold. We’re focusing on financial literacy in emerging markets, increasing the numbers of millennials, women and minorities in middle management to get them into C-suite opportunities—because 60 percent of the financial decisions are being made by a household that’s either being headed by a woman, a millennial or a minority— to make sure they have a seat at the decision table.

These 5 States Had 4 Years of Consecutive Poverty Decline

California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan and North Carolina: For the fourth consecutive year between 2012 and 2017, these five states had a decline in poverty rates according to the 2017 American Community Survey (ACS) conducted by the United States Census Bureau. The ACS is an ongoing survey that generates vital data including information helping  to determine how more than $675 billion in federal and state funds are distributed.

SB 826 Women On Boards Passes. What Happens Next?

SB 826, known as the women on boards bill, narrowly cleared the California State Assembly with the minimum amount of votes required and then went on to clear the state Senate. The measure requiring corporate boards to include at least one woman by the end of 2019 and depending on the size of the company, up to three by the end of 2021 now sits on Governor Jerry Brown’s desk waiting to be approved or vetoed.
