House Votes to Eliminate Dodd-Frank

The House of Representatives has voted to pass the Financial CHOICE Act of 2017; among its objectives, the act aims to restructure the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) into a consumer law enforcement agency and replace the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

The Financial CHOICE Act was first introduced on April 26, 2017 by Representative Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.

During an April hearing on the proposed act, A Legislative Proposal to Create Hope and Opportunity for Investors, Consumers, and Entrepreneurs, Hensarling stated, “The bill [Financial CHOICE Act] will unleash opportunities for economic growth, foster capital formation, provide Main Street job creators with regulatory relief, so more Americans can go back to work in good careers and give their families a better life.”

The act will now move to the Senate for a vote, where it is expected to struggle if it fails to generate bipartisan support.

Newsletter: Equal Pay for Women and Minorities – What’s the Real Reason Women Get Paid Less than Men?

Intel Achieves Pay Parity for Women and Minorities

Tech giant Intel recently released its Diversity & Inclusion Annual Report 2016, detailing the state of women and minorities within the company. While the report makes clear that the overall increase of underrepresented minorities in Intel’s U.S. workforce was small, reaching 12.5 percent in 2016, up from 12.3 percent in 2014, the company achieved 100 percent pay parity and promotion parity for both women and underrepresented minorities.

From meeting its retention goal to the incredible achievement of pay parity for women and underrepresented minorities, Intel is moving forward. Evidenced by the small rise of underrepresented minorities in their U.S. workforce, there is room for improvement and work left to be done. The important thing to recognize is strides are being made, and any forward movement is better than standing still or regressing.

Happy Women’s History Month!

The month of March is Women’s History Month, dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the central role of women in American history. Women’s History Month began as Women’s History Week in 1981 and was observed as such until 1986. Beginning in 1987, resulting from petitions from the National Women’s History Project, Congress extended the week to a month. Every year, Congress passes a resolution for Women’s History Month, and the president issues a proclamation.

What’s the Real Reason Women Get Paid Less than Men?

Despite the amazing progress of the past century, women continue to struggle with a lack of pay parity. Currently, women working full-time earn just 80 cents for every dollar a man earns-that’s $10,470 less annually-and the elimination of the gender pay gap has largely stalled over the past 15 years. A recent Wells Fargo report delves in to the real reasons women are still paid less than men.

Newsletter: Women Prefer to be in the Workplace – Women in Power Around the World

Women Prefer to be in the Workforce

Only half of women in the world participate in the labor force, but the majority of them would prefer to, according to a new report from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Gallup Inc. Findings reveal that 58 percent of women not in the workforce would like to be working, and 41 percent of women would prefer to work and take care of their families.

This desire to work varies little between regions, whether women in that particular country comprise a large portion of the workforce or not. The study, which surveyed 149,000 individuals worldwide, makes clear that those who support working women are more than double the percentage who prefer women stay home.

The Number of Women in Power is Growing, But it Remains Small

Even though women in power around the world remain part of a small collective-and rarely remain in power for long periods of time-they are growing, according to the Pew Research Center (PRC). There are currently 15 women world leaders in office, eight of whom are their country’s first woman in power.

“Fearless Girl” Statue Tarnished by Peeing Dog

Installed in March 2017, the “Fearless Girl” statue facing Wall Street’s famous charging bull was erected as part of State Street Global Advisors’ (SSGA) campaign to increase the number of women on boards. The statue quickly gained national attention as a representation of women’s empowerment and the gender gap in the American workplace, particularly in the boardroom and C-suite.

One New York City artist has taken exception to this work of art, however, and this week created a statue of a small dog, titled “Pissing Pug,” positioned next to the fearless girl. The reasoning behind the decision to depict a dog urinating on a girl?

“I decided to build this dog and make it crappy to downgrade the statue, exactly how the girl is a downgrade on the bull,” stated Alex Gardega, who considers the fearless girl statue a mere publicity stunt with no connection to feminism.

National Financial Capability Month 2017: How is Your Financial Literacy?

April is National Financial Capability Month, 30 days dedicated to recognizing the importance of financial literacy for a stable future and teaching Americans to establish sound financial practices. Originating from initiatives to educate the youth on healthy financial habits, the Senate passed Resolution 316 in 2004 officially dedicating the fourth month of the year to financial literacy.

Adopting financial habits today that situate you for success tomorrow is fundamental, and Americans need help. In a recent release, President Donald Trump addressed the country’s common financial concerns, “Empowering Americans to make independent financial decisions and informed choices is critically important to our Nation’s prosperity.  Yet more than half of households today do not have 3 months of funds saved for emergency, and most families with children are not currently saving for college.  In addition, a majority of working Americans worry about running out of money in retirement, and nearly a third of workers have no retirement savings at all.”

A Helping Hand for American Employees

This week, the House of Representatives passed the Encouraging Employee Ownership Act of 2017, bipartisan legislation making it easier for companies to offer employees business ownership opportunities. The bill received support from Democrats and Republicans alike and was approved by a vote of 331-87. In a release, the House Financial Services Committee articulated, “It [the bill] would update a nearly 20-year-old Securities and Exchange Commission rule that inhibits employee ownership opportunities due to burdensome disclosure requirements.”

Newsletter: NAWRB InnovateHER Challenge Winner & Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Happy Memorial Day Weekend from NAWRB!

Observed the last Monday of May, Memorial Day is a holiday honoring the women and men who have died in military service for the United States. Memorial Day was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 1971, and was originally known as Decoration Day in the years following the American Civil War. Americans commemorate the day by attending memorials and cemeteries, holding parades and hosting neighborhood barbecues.

This year, Memorial Day also commemorates the centennial anniversary of America’s entrance into World War I. Also named The Great War, it saw 4.7 million Americans serve-a representation of over 25 percent of the American male population aged 18 to 31 at the time-and more than 100,000 lose their lives.

As we spend the long weekend with our loved ones, we remember and honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
