Nothing says inspiring like 340 women in the real estate finance industry joining together at mPowering You! On October 21st in Denver, Colorado, the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) presented mPowering You, an event that will go down in history for this powerful and great organization. “It has never happened at the MBA in our 104-year history,” stated Marcia Davies, COO of MBA. “It’s time to be empowered.”

The conversations and ideas generated within this space fostered networking and powerful narratives, and assisted in the creation of decisive branding and career advancements. Featuring sessions like Know and Grow Your Value and Gender and Generations: Driving New Forms of Leadership, the summit strengthened and showcased the value and power of women.

Attendees heard from successful women in the industry, including Mika Brzezinski, New York Times Best-Selling Author and Co-Host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, and Ruth Sherman, Executive Speech Coach & Celebrity Media Trainer, who shared the importance of women knowing their value, mastering their message, owning each moment and unleashing their potential.

Attracting Millennials to Homeownership

Are Millennials interested in settling down into homeownership? This question is subject to heavy debate in the housing industry. In the first part of our “Attracting Millennials” series, “Attracting Millennials into the Housing Ecosystem,” we discussed how we can encourage this young and thriving generational segment as leaders in the housing ecosystem. This second installment will explore how to incite their interest as homebuyers by addressing the perceived and real obstacles they face.

Myth: Millennials Are Not Buying Homes

NAWRB’s article “Millennials and the Homeownership Puzzle” explored whether this generation’s desire for homeownership has mitigated because they are delaying “independent living, marriage and parenthood much later than older generations did.” These three milestones, it continues, “all contribute to homeownership and the desire to own a home.”

Millennial women, especially, are prioritizing their education and careers over marriage and buying a home of their own. Many of them are college students still living at home. Of women living with their families, 56.1 percent are between the ages of 18 and 24. Moreover, women are marrying into their late twenties and older. In 1940, women on average married at 21.5 years of age; today, the average age has increased to 27.

Why Do Women Entrepreneurs Get Denied Loans?

Recently, the American Bankers Association (ABA) met with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to discuss Dodd-Frank Act Section 1071, which requires financial institutions to report women-owned, minority-owned and small business lending data. Although this collection of information may represent significant costs and burdens to financial institutions, it is imperative that it take place.




HUD Sets Aside $38 million to Fight Housing Discrimination

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced this week that it is “making $38 million available to fight housing discrimination through the Department’s Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP).” Three FHIP funding notices will offer grants supporting various fair housing activities, from public education efforts to fair housing testing in the rental market. The deadline for applications is September 18, 2017.

Pets are important parts of our lives, bringing us incredible joy as they grow and providing loving companionship. As a result of this connection, our pets are often hit just as hard as us during challenging times, but they have no say in how their life changes as a result.
