#5 Know Yourself with Marcia Davies: Thank You!
A HUGE thank you to Marcia Davies, COO of Mortgage Bankers Association and Founder of mPower at MBA, for kicking off April’s NAWRB Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Council (NDILC) Ten Women Leadership Principle Theme: #5 Know Yourself.
Know Yourself: Be authentic and lead in a way that is true to you. Own your unique talents and strengths, and empower those around you.
In this call, the NDILC members shared inspiring stories of how they practice authenticity every day as women leaders.
“To be authentic in the workplace, you have to feel passionate about the work you’re doing. Otherwise, you don’t show up as your best self” – Marcia Davies, COO of Mortgage Bankers Association and Founder of mPower at MBA
“Don’t let others tell you who you want to be. Go after what YOU think you want to be” – Teresa Palacios Smith, Chief DE&I Officer at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices
“Say it like it is” – Desirée Patno, CEO/Founder of Women in the Housing & Real Estate Ecosystem – NAWRB

A Forgotten Chapter in U.S. History: When Women Had To Choose Between Mortgages and Motherhood
As we round out the last day of Women’s History Month, we at NAWRB found this eye-opening story a relevant one to share:
It was 1972 when 25-year-old Marjorie Wintjen and 27-year-old Paul Wintjen sought a mortgage for a home that would suit their four-person family, all with a $14,000 salary between the two of them.
“But their lending officer didn’t want to count Marjorie’s income. the officer agreed to include half of it, which would enable them to qualify for the mortgage, if the Wintjens would agree to one condition: She would have to provide a medical certificate stating that she was sterilized.”
