U.S. Adds 261,000 Jobs in October

In the month of October, the U.S. added 261,000 jobs and the unemployment rate dropped to 4.1 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had expected a job increase of 325,000 in October, anticipating a recovery from the September hurricanes. September displayed a gain of 18,000 jobs for the U.S. economy, with BLS data originally showing that employers had cut 33,000 jobs.

Gender Equality Got Worse for Women in 2017

According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Gender Gap Report 2017, the gender gap between men and women has gotten bigger—in education, health, politics and economics—for the first time since the organization began collecting the data in 2006. The report ranks 144 countries based on their progress in gender equality.

Homeownership Rate Increases in the 3rd Quarter 2017

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest “Quarterly Residential Vacancies and Homeownership” release, the U.S. homeownership rate increased to 63.9 percent in the third quarter of 2017. This rate was not statistically different from those of the second quarter 2017 (63.7 percent) or the third quarter 2016 (63.5 percent).

New Home Sales Surge in September 2017

The sale of new homes increased to the fastest pace in 10 years, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). New single-family home sales rose in September 2017 to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 667,000 sales, marking an 18.9 percent increase from the 561,000 new homes sales in August and a 17 percent spike from the 570,000 new homes sold in September 2016.
