Saturday, October 26th, is National Make a Difference Day, a day that brings together community service organizations every  fourth Saturday of October to make a difference in improving the lives of others, no matter how big or small. The event was created by USA WEEKEND magazine and Points of Light in 1992, and quickly became the largest national day of community service for over twenty years.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign dedicated to increasing awareness of the disease, helping those affected through early detection, education and support, and fundraising for breast cancer research. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in 1985 by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries in an effort to advocate mammography as the most effective course of action when fighting breast cancer.

Women Inventors Comprise Less Than 13% of Patent Applicants Globally

Across the world, women inventors make up less than 13 percent of patent applications, and most of the women in that share are the only female in a team, according to a new study by the UK’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO). The IPO study explores the representation of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) in worldwide patenting, highlighting gains and areas of improvement for women’s presence among STEM inventors.

National Women’s Health & Fitness Day

Today marks National Women’s Health & Fitness Day, the largest event in the United States promoting women’s health awareness and physical activity that occurs on every last Wednesday of September. Over 500 groups across the country will join forces to inspire women of all ages to be healthy and active through events at senior centers, hospitals, health centers, parks, schools, and other community locations. An estimated 50,000 to 75,000 women are expected to participate this year.

Clarksville, Tennessee Named Best Place to Live in the U.S.

MONEY recently released their ranking of the 2019 Best Places to Live, featuring cities across the nation with Clarksville, Tennessee coming out on top. Places with a population of 50,000 or more were measured based on factors such as economic health, cost of living, diversity, public education, income, health and safety, and amenities.

WHER Chat: Women Hold One in Five Corporate Board Seats in America’s Top Companies

The Wall Street Journal reports that women now hold one out of every five seats on the corporate boards of America’s 3,000 largest publicly-traded companies. This increase of women’s representation on corporate boards increased from 15 percent in 2016 to 20 percent this year, according to data from Equilar.

WHER Chat: Lowest Poverty Rate for Female-Householder Families

According to a new U.S. Census Bureau report, the official poverty rate decreased 0.5 percentage points from 12.3 percent to 11.8 percent between 2017 and 2018. A large proportion of this decline is attributed to a drop in the poverty rate of female-householder families with no spouse present, which dropped by 1.7 percentage points to 26.8 percent. The poverty rate for this group is at the lowest on record. The previous low poverty rate for these families was 28.5 percent in both 2000 and 2017.

‘Never Forget’ 9/11: National Day of Service and Remembrance

Today marks the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks that took the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans in 2001. Eighteen years on from this national tragedy, we take the time to remember those who lost their lives on that fateful day.

On December 18, 2001, Congress named September 11 ‘Patriot Day’ to commemorate the anniversary of the attacks. Eight years later, on April 21, 2009, Congress requested that the observance of September 11 be annually recognized as ‘National Day of Service and Remembrance.’
