NAWRB: Tell us a little about yourself and describe what you do.

I’m Cheryl Travis-Johnson, and I’m the Chief Operating Officer for VRM Mortgage Services. I’m also a part of the Council for Inclusion in Financial Services. At my first job as a COO of VRM, I handle end-to-end servicing solutions for clients from originations all the way through REO sales. For the Council for Inclusion in Financial Services, it’s kind of two-fold. We’re focusing on financial literacy in emerging markets, increasing the numbers of millennials, women and minorities in middle management to get them into C-suite opportunities—because 60 percent of the financial decisions are being made by a household that’s either being headed by a woman, a millennial or a minority— to make sure they have a seat at the decision table.

October is National Women’s Small Business Month, dedicated to celebrating the contributions and successes of our nation’s women small business owners. Women-owned businesses are one of the fastest growing segments of the economy, as four out of 10 U.S. businesses are owned by women, according to the American Express State of Women-Owned Businesses 2018 report, and they comprise a total of 12.3 million firms. Let’s take a moment to celebrate the triumphs of women business owners and acknowledge the challenges they face.

DOL Awards $1.9 Million to Increase Apprenticeship Opportunities for Youths and Adults with Disabilities

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) has recently announced that it has awarded a two-year, $1.9 million contract to Oakland, California’s Social Policy Research Associates, Inc. (SPRA) to improve apprenticeship opportunities for youths and adults with disabilities in high-growth industries. This follows the recent presidential Executive Order on Expanding Apprenticeship in America.

SBA Disaster Assistance Available for Residents Affected by Hurricane Michael

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)’s Administrator Linda McMahon announced that the SBA will provide disaster loan assistance to Florida businesses, homeowners and renters affected by the recent Hurricane Michael, following the Presidential disaster declaration for Mexico Beach, Florida and nearby areas.

October 11th marks the International Day of the Girl, a day declared by the United Nations in 2011 “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.” Join this youth-led movement as activists groups and the community come together to raise awareness of, and advance, gender justice and opportunities for girls around the world.

The Debate on W. 58th Street: Sheltering Homeless Responsibly and Ethically

New York City is the epitome of the American Dream, where young professionals go to achieve their professional dreams and develop financial independence. Frank Sinatra crooning the lines “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere/ It’s up to you, New York New York” embodies the hope and unpredictable nature of the concrete jungle. The city, however, is home to both billionaires as well as the largest population of homeless in the nation, with around 77,000 homeless people, according to a 2017 report by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The city with the second-largest homeless population is Los Angeles, with around 55,000 people living on the street or in shelters.

NAWRB’s Graphic Designer went on an exploration for inspiration to enhance the already full of life company NAWRB—an advanced tool for women across the globe that enhances Diversity and Inclusion in all fields for women. What better inspiration than Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama? Ms. Kusama, currently at age 88, has created a scope for the imagination through compulsive repetition of images throughout her life as an artist. She has created multiple experiences through her use of space to immerse people of all ages into another world.

FHFA Requests Public Input for Duty to Serve Program Provisions – Deadline Nov. 2, 2018

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) recently released a Request for Input to the public regarding proposed modifications to the Enterprises’, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, Duty to Serve (DTS) program. These proposed modifications will the purchase or rehabilitation of distressed properties activity, chattell loan pilot,  investment in LIHTC properties and financing by small financial institutions, as included in the 2018-2020 Underserved Markets Plans.

NAWRB’s ‘Next Chapter’ Addresses Elder Financial Abuse

Elder abuse is a worldwide, and often silent, issue affecting the older population in various forms, including financial, physical, psychological and sexual abuse, and neglect. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 15.7 percent of people 60 years and older experience abuse, while only 4 percent of these instances are reported. The aging population is increasing rapidly in countries across the globe, and only 40 percent of countries have a national plan in place to address elder abuse.
