This Sunday will mark the fourth anniversary of WED; the first installment was introduced in New York City at the United Nations in 2014 and was recognized by 144 countries.

Women-Owned Businesses Grew 114 Percent from 1997 to 2017
According to the 7th Annual State of Women-Owned Businesses Report, women-owned businesses have increased by 114 percent in the last 20 years and are growing at 2.5 times the national average—women are currently starting an average of 849 new businesses per day. The report, commissioned by American Express OPEN, also found that businesses owned by women of color have grown 467 percent since 1997.
Millennial Men Help Break the Glass Ceiling
A recent study from the Boston Consulting Group reports that millennial men are more receptive than older men to women’s issues in the workplace. When compared to their older counterparts, millennial men are more likely to be in a dual-income household, contribute to child care, desire paid parental leave programs, and to “adapt their behaviors in support of their female coworkers.”
Gender Equality Got Worse for Women in 2017
According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Gender Gap Report 2017, the gender gap between men and women has gotten bigger—in education, health, politics and economics—for the first time since the organization began collecting the data in 2006. The report ranks 144 countries based on their progress in gender equality.
The Difference in Men and Women’s Views on Gender Diversity
Men and women have different standards when it comes to gender diversity, according to the 2017 installment of Women in the Workplace from McKinsey & Co. and LeanIn.org—a comprehensive study of the state of women in corporate America. The report features pipeline data and human resource information from 222 companies employing over 12 million workers, including more than 70,000 responses to a survey exploring experiences relating to gender, opportunity, career and work-life issues.

Happy International Day of the Girl!
In 2011, the United Nations declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl in order to “help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.” The observance is viewed as a day of action, a 100 percent youth-led movement working toward gender equality and the advancement of women’s rights.
