From September 15th to October 15th, National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, stories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Mexico, Central and South America, Spain and the Caribbean. The observance began in September 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded into a month in 1989.

Accountability for Women’s Diversity and Inclusion
With the Dodd-Frank’s establishment of the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion (OMWI) for regulated entities in 2010, the movement for equality in the workplace received a significant hoist. The issue then became accountability; how can we ensure the true inclusion of women and minorities?
Boardroom Diversity: Myth or Reality?
Last year, our article, Women in Boardrooms: Ethical and Profitable, detailed the successes and failures of women’s inclusion in boardrooms across the world. Largely underrepresented in the executive offices of top American companies, women face pervasive obstacles when trying to get a seat at the table despite the fact that diverse boards consistently outperform male-dominated ones. Furthermore, the opportunity cost of not practicing diversity is remarkable, amounting to $567 billion for the American firms studied in Grant Thornton’s report Women in Business: the Value of Diversity.
Minority and Women Inclusion 2016
Diversity and inclusion (D&I) has grown in prevalence in recent years, most significantly with the 2011 establishment of the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion (OMWI) for regulated entities. The most pivotal aspect of this movement is accountability, to ensure that diversity work is actually being conducted and not just discussed. Entities—most recently the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)—have taken initiative in reporting their progress by providing Congress with annual OMWI reports. Women in Boardrooms: Ethical and Profitable
There is no two ways about it, diversity in the workplace is essential. True equality—a basic tenet on which this country is built, second only to freedom—cannot be achieved until women receive equal representation and opportunity in our workforce.
After considering ethical responsibility, we must consider the pragmatic benefits of being inclusive to women and minorities. By limiting the participation of entire groups of people we are voluntarily denying the meaningful contributions they can make to our workforce, economy and country. Continue reading →
