The University of Houston has received a $2.3 million continuation grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to help them create 300 new small businesses in Houston, Texas. The recipients of the award—Bauer College’s Small Business Development Center—services around 10,000 businesses a year in 32 counties along the Gulf Coast.
The college’s Small Business Development Center helps a wide range of businesses in Houston—from tech companies to taco shops— with business planning, advising, sources of funding, financial proposals and more. It also assists entrepreneurs in growing their businesses by offering classes focused on taxes, marketing and cash flow analysis.
The creation of 300 new small businesses will be pivotal to helping Houston financially recover after the effects of Hurricane Harvey in August of last year. Making landfall near Rockport, Texas, the hurricane’s damaging effects spread across Houston and other surrounding areas.This historical flooding, according to the NOAA, separated over 30,000 individuals from their homes and damaged or destroyed over 200,000 homes and businesses.
“The mission of the UH SBDC is to help Houston do what Houston does best―build something from nothing, pick ourselves up in the face of challenge and adversity to rebuild, and challenge the norm to innovate and create,” states Latha Ramchand, Dean of Bauer College. “Small business is the lifeblood of the American economy, and in my mind, no other city but Houston demonstrates the impact that can be made with the determination, persistence and passion of small business owners.”
