Since 2003, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) has recognized the month of September as REALTOR® Safety Month, dedicated to raising awareness of the dangers real estate agents face on the job and informing the industry on important safety tips to practice during day-to-day operations.
The 2017 NAR Member Safety Report reveals:
- 38 percent experienced a situation that made them fear for their personal safety or safety of their personal information
- 44 percent of these respondents were women and 25 percent were men
- 2 percent experienced a robbery, 1 percent an assault, and 1 percent identity theft
- 52 percent of men and 57 percent of women carry a self-defense weapon
- Pepper spray was the most popular weapon for women (27 percent), followed by firearm (12percent)
- Firearm was most popular for men (25 percent), followed by pocket knife (11 percent)
- Responding to whether or not their brokerage has standard procedures for agent safety, 44 percent of respondents said yes, 26 percent said no, 30 percent didn’t know
Important Safety Tips
- Don’t show a property alone
- Tell a colleague, friend or family member where you are going before you show a property
- Show properties before sundown
- Carry a weapon for self-defense
- Ensure that you have cell phone service
- Follow your client throughout a property, do not lead them
