May is National Bike Month, showcasing the benefits of bicycling and encouraging a greater amount of Americans to participate in the activity. Established in 1956, and sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, the observance has events and celebrations in communities across the country. As part of the month, National Bike to Work Week is held the third week of May, and this year Bike to Work Day falls on May 19.

Biking Benefits

  • Save money and time
  • Help the environment by using your car less
  • Explore your community
  • Improved cardiovascular health

Whether you’re doing it for transportation or exercise, biking has several benefits. According to research from the League of American Bicyclists and America Bikes, 40 percent of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a great, practicable way to get to your destination.

Staying Safe

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

  • In 2015, 818 pedalcyclists were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the U.S., an increase from 729 in 2014
  • An estimated 45,000 pedalcyclists were injured in crashes in 2015
  • Pedalcyclist deaths accounted for 2.3 percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities

When biking, it is important to wear a helmet at all times and obey the rules of the road. Remember to choose the time of day carefully, and always remain visible to drivers by wearing bright or reflective clothing and utilizing bicycle headlights and rear lights.
