On Sunday, May 13th, Americans will celebrate Mother’s Day, a national holiday honoring mothers and motherhood. Mother’s Day was first organized by Anna Jarvis in Grafton, WV and Philadelphia, PA on May 10, 1908. As the annual celebration gained popularity, Jarvis requested that Congress officially recognize a day to honor mothers. In 1914 Congress designated the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

- Over 33 percent of women who gave birth in 2016 had a bachelor’s degree or higher. Almost 9 out of 10 women giving birth had completed high school or higher.
- For all females in the United States ages 15 and over, 31 percent have no children, 27 percent have three or more children, 26 percent have two children, and 16 percent have one child.
- The average age of first time mothers in the United States was 26.4 in 2015.
- The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that consumers will spend $23.1 billion celebrating Mother’s Day this year. Consumers will spend an average of $180 on gifts for their mothers.
- In 2018, the NRF predicts that 77 percent of shoppers will give their mothers cards; 69 percent will give them flowers; and 55 percent will take her out for a good meal.
- About $4.6 billion will be spent on jewelry this Mother’s Day, according to NRF.
- Insure.com’s 2017 Mother’s Day Index estimates that the tasks mothers perform at home would be worth $67,619 a year in the workforce.
