NAWRB would like to wish our community a happy Easter weekend! Celebrating Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead, the holiday—commonly referred to as the moveable feast due to its traveling date—observes services, get-togethers and egg hunts take place around the country.

In its annual Easter forecast, the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates Americans will spend a record $18.4 billion on the holiday in 2017. Among their expenses, people will use:

  • $5.8 billion on food
  • $1.2 billion on flowers
  • $788 million on greeting cards

For their purchases, 58 percent of American consumers will shop at discount stores and 46 percent will visit department stores.

The NRF study further reveals that only 26 percent of American shoppers plan on visiting local small businesses for their Easter needs.  With 80 percent of small businesses, and 91 percent of women-owned businesses, employing no one other than the owner, this is dismal news.

A recent Wells Fargo report reveals that women spend 50 percent more time than men on housework and family care, and Easter weekend is no different. From decorating to cooking the Easter meal and organizing egg hunts, women ensure the day is a success.

The difference between buying form a chain store and a mom and pop shop is tremendous for a small business owner. Buying your products from a small business this weekend will lend an instrumental helping hand to your local entrepreneurs and community.

Whether you are a singleton or parent, there are several ways you can be a community participator this Easter, from working with local charities to purchasing decorations from a small store in your town.

Remember to be thankful for what you have and cherish the moment. NAWRB wishes you and yours a happy Easter weekend!
