In commemoration of Independence Day, we’ve compiled interesting facts about the observance and history of the 4th of July.
4th of July History
- The Declaration of Independence had 56 signers, including John Adams and Thomas Jefferson
- The founding fathers actually declared independence on July 2, not July 4 when Congress accepted the declaration
- Benjamin Franklin, aged 70, was the oldest signer
- Two future presidents, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, also signed the Declaration of Independence; they both died on the 50th anniversary of the declaration’s signing
Fun Facts
- Fireworks: in 2016, the U.S. imported $307.8 million worth of fireworks; $296.2 million came from China
- Americans are expected to spend $7 billion on food and drink for the holiday
- Approximately 150 million hot dogs will be consumed on July 4
- In July 1776, the population was 2.5 million; the U.S. population as of July 4, 2016 is 323 million
- Seward, Nebraska is America’s official Fourth of July city
