Inc. released a report listing the top 10 cities where women-led companies are most likely to succeed using data from this year’s list of the 5,000 fastest growing private U.S. companies and then ranking metros by the number of women-owned companies that are based there. Washington, D.C. takes the top spot, but three cities from Texas were ranked as the top cities for women-led companies.

National Make a Difference Day 2019

Saturday, October 26th, is National Make a Difference Day, a day that brings together community service organizations every  fourth Saturday of October to make a difference in improving the lives of others, no matter how big or small. The event was created by USA WEEKEND magazine and Points of Light in 1992, and quickly became the largest national day of community service for over twenty years.

National Geographic’s Best & Worst Countries to Be a Woman

A National Geographic report ranks the best and worst countries to be a woman based on data from the upcoming Women, Peace, and Security Index, which analyzes global differences by “measuring women’s inclusion in society, sense of security, and exposure to discrimination.” Norway ranks as the top country to be a woman, while the United States ranked at No.19.

WHER Chat: California is Home to Top Cities for Minority-Owned Startups

Ecommerce software platform Volusion released a report on the top places in the United States with the greatest share of minority-owned startups. Their findings show that five out of the top 15 metropolitan areas with the highest share of minority-owned startups are in California, and only the top nine areas have more than 40 percent minority-owned startups.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign dedicated to increasing awareness of the disease, helping those affected through early detection, education and support, and fundraising for breast cancer research. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in 1985 by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries in an effort to advocate mammography as the most effective course of action when fighting breast cancer.

Unemployment Rate Hits 50-Year Low in September

The unemployment rate, or the jobless rate, dropped 0.2 percentage points to 3.5 percent in September 2019, marking the lowest rate since December 1969, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). When discouraged workers and the underemployed are factored in, the rate has still declined 0.3 percentage points to 6.9 percent, matching its lowest in almost 19 years and near the all-time low of 6.8 percent.
