California Governor Jerry Brown has signed the New Parent Leave Act (SB 63) enabling 2.6 million small business workers to take 12 weeks of unpaid family leave without having to worry about losing their jobs. The new bill will go into effect on January 1, 2018.

Happy International Day of the Girl!
In 2011, the United Nations declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl in order to “help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.” The observance is viewed as a day of action, a 100 percent youth-led movement working toward gender equality and the advancement of women’s rights.
Mental Health in the Workplace 2017
World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 every year with the objective to raise awareness of mental health issues and increase efforts supporting better mental health. The theme for 2017 is Mental health in the workplace, a central topic because a person’s work life can play a leading role in their state of mind and wellbeing.
Hispanics: College Enrollment Leading to Homeownership
The Pew Research Center reports that the college enrollment rate of Hispanics continues to rise and their dropout rate has fallen to a new low. Analyzing Census Bureau data, Pew found that in 2016, the Hispanic high school dropout rate decreased to 10 percent from 16 percent just five years earlier; and Hispanic high school graduates’ enrollment in college reached 47 percent in 2016, a marked increase from 32 percent in 1999.
