According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.8 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, and this number is projected to increase to 14 million by 2050. WHER Chat: Trump Administration Passes Building Blocks of STEM Act

On December 24, 2019, S. 737, the Building Blocks of STEM Act, was signed into law by the Trump Administration. The bill instructs  the National Science Foundation (NSF) “to more equitably allocate funding for research with a focus on early childhood education.” It also requires NSF to support research on potential factors that discourage or encourage girls to engage in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities and education.

U.S. and World Populations on New Year’s Day

Before the start of the new year, the U.S. Census Bureau released their projections for the United States and World populations for the first month of the year. According to their report, the U.S population was 330, 222,422 on January 1, 2020, representing an increase of 0.61 percent, or 1,991,085, since New Year’s Day 2019. Since the last decade, the population has grown by 21, 476, 884, or by 6.96 percent.

As the year 2020 brings the advent of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU), rent control and a host of other real estate related items here in California, Women in the Housing & Real Estate Ecosystem (NAWRB) will introduce Know the Rules of the GameⓇ in full swing. To help people achieve their dreams of financial security and growth, NAWRB will be joining forces with Faith & Community Empowerment (FACE) in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to empower the next generation to manage their assets and build their wealth. The official signing will take place on January 18th, 2020, during the 8th Annual OC Home Fair at Chapman University, hosted by NAWRB Certified Delegate Angie Weeks.

How Cognitive Decline Leaves the Older Population Vulnerable to Elder Financial Abuse

According to a 2011 Government Accountability Office (GAO) study, approximately 14.1 percent of adults age 60 and older in the United States have experienced some kind of physical, psychological or sexual abuse; potential neglect; or financial exploitation in the past year. Cognitive decline is a key factor that makes the aging population susceptible to elder financial exploitation, according to the Elder Financial Exploitation 2018 report by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of the Investor Advocate.

As Christmas Day neared its end, Californians in parts of Santa Barbara and Orange County received an unexpected tornado warning due to a risk caused by heavy rain, snow and winds resulting in a winter storm. Two storms developed during this time with one in Southern California that flooded the 5 Freeway in the Grapevine, Angeles Crest Highway, the 15 Freeway in the Cajon Pass and other freeways across Los Angeles County.

Women-Owned Businesses Received Under 5% of Federal Contracts in FY2018

The National Women’s Business Council’s (NWBC) just released their 2019 Annual Report, titled,  “Advancing Women Entrepreneurs. Growing America’s Economy.” The report identifies three important initiatives and provides policy recommendations for the following: (1) improving access to capital for female founders, (2) encouraging more women entrepreneurs to start companies in STEM-related fields, and (3) removing obstacles for women business owners in rural areas.
