Congress Passes GOP Tax Bill

After the Senate approved the final version of the bill early Wednesday morning, the House of Representatives passed the GOP tax bill for a second time this afternoon. The House had passed the bill on Tuesday, but a revote was ordered after the Senate parliamentarian ruled provisions in the Republican bill violated its Byrd Rule.

Fastest-Growing States, Idaho Leads the Way

According to newly-released data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Idaho is the fastest-growing state in the country, depicting a 2.2 percent population increase to 1.7 million from July 1, 2016 to July 1, 2017. Nevada follows the Gem State with an increase of 2 percent, Utah with 1.9 percent, Washington with 1.7 percent and Florida with 1.6 percent.

High School Completion Rate Rises to Highest in U.S. History

According to new Educational Attainment data released today by the Census Bureau, the high school completion rate in the U.S. has reached its highest level in history. Today, 90 percent of the U.S. population age 25 and older has completed high school. These figures represent significant shift from 1940 when 76 percent of the population age 25 and older had not earned a high school diploma.

42 Percent of Women have Faced Job Discrimination

According to new data from the Pew Research Center, about 4 in 10 women in the United States have experienced job discrimination. The research center’s survey found that women’s treatment in the workplace is disparate, varying from earning less for the same job to not being recognized for their professional contributions. Women in the United States are twice as likely (42 vs. 22 percent) as men to report experiencing at least one of the eight specific forms of gender discrimination identified by the Pew Research Center.

On the morning of September 21, 2017, New York City’s hustle and bustle perfectly matched the excitement at the 2017 International Conference on Gender and Sustainability (ICOGAS).On the margins of the 72nd U.N. General Assembly, and in this incredible setting, the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan witnessed the collaboration and camaraderie of leading global strategists, academics, CEOs and international leaders to generate actionable gender equality and women’s economic sustainability solutions.

Among leaders were Ameenah Gurib, President of Mauritius, and First Ladies Reema Carmona of Trinidad and Tobago, Sandra Granger of Guyana, Lorena Castillo de Varela of Panama, Roman Tesfaye of Ethiopia and Dominique Ouattara of the Ivory Coast. To have these leaders united at one event under a common goal ensured through power and dedication that the issues and questions raised during the conference did not fall on deaf ears.
